The easier Marangu Route
 

Day 1

Drive from Arusha to a hotel in Moshi. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 2

Morning walk through the Kilimanjaro forest and spend the night at Mandara Hut, situated at 2700 metres.

Day 3

Climb to Horombo Hut which lies at 3720 metres.

Day 4

Ascend to Kibo Hut at 5680 metres.

Day 5

Today will be your final ascent to the summit, Uhuru Peak which stands at 5895.

Overnight at the Horombo Hut.

Day 6

In the morning descend to the Marangu Gate where you will be met and transferred to your Moshi Hotel for the night.

Day 7

Return to Arusha

KiliThe tougher Machame Route
 

Day 1

Drive from Arusha to a hotel in Moshi. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 2

After breakfast you will be transferred to the Machame Gate and will commence climbing through fields and forest. You will pass the forest guard up to the first uniport hut. Dinner and overnight at the Machame Hut which lies at about 3100 metres.

Your total walking time on this day will be approximately 5 hours.

Day 3

After breakfast depart from the glades of the rainforest and continue on an ascending path. You will cross a valley and walk along a steep rock ridge. Overnight will be at the Shira Hut which stands at an altitude of 3658 metres. Your total walking time on this day will be approximately 4 hours.

Day 4

Today you will continue walking along the eastern side of the mountain, towards the Kibo Peak and the Lava Tower. You will reach an altitude of 4876 metres today and you will overnight at the Barranco Hut. Today you will walk for approximately 6  hours.

Day 5

Today you will pass the Karanga Valley and connect with the Mweka trail. Dinner and overnight will be at the Barafu Hut which stands at 4600 metres. You will walk for approximately 8 hours today.

Day 6

Early in the morning you will begin your ascend to the highest peak – the Uhuru Peak which is located at an altitude of 5895 metres. Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa and your walk to the summit will take about 6 hours. From the summit walk down to Mweka Hut. Today will be your toughest day and your total walking time will be approximately 11 hours.

Day 7

After breakfast descend down to the Mweka Gate where you will be met and transferred to your Moshi Hotel for the night.

Day 8

Return to Arusha.

Day 1

Walk from your base hotel to the Meteorological Station located at 3050 metres (at least a 5 hour walk).

Day 2

Depart early in the morning heading for Mackinders Hut located at 4175 metres. Arrival should be by lunchtime.

Day 3

Acclimatization with accommodation at Mackinders. Things to do on this day include exploring tarns and glacial valleys.

Day 4

Leave Mackinder’s Camp by 3 in the morning. Arrival at the summit will be in time for sunrise. Descend back down the mountain arriving at your base hotel by early evening.
